Importance of Knee Strengthening

By strengthening the knee you become less prone to injuries as you are exercising or performing your daily activities. If you are having knee pain, learning how to strengthen and stretch the knees properly will help alleviate your pain.

The knee is a complex joint which bears approximately 80% of your weight while standing. It is composed of ligaments, bones, joints, and tendons, which provide the framework of the knee.  In order to strengthen the knee the focus needs to be on the muscles surrounding the joint.  In this case the muscles that need to be strengthened are the muscles of the hip, thigh, and lower leg.

To strengthen the knee you need to focus on the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and hip muscles. It is also important to work on stretching as well. Some examples of these exercises are:

·         Squats
·         Bridging
·         Calf Raises
·         IT band stretch
