Carpal Tunnel Prevention

Carpal Tunnel comes with a variety of unpleasant symptoms. Some symptoms include tingling, numbness, weakness, or pain felt in the fingers. You may have numbness or reduced strength when trying to grip things.  Mild carpal tunnel symptoms primarily affect the hand and sometimes forearm, but they can radiate up into the shoulder.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by excess pressure on your median nerve in your wrist. The median nerve and other tendons run from your forearm to your hand through the carpal tunnel, which is a small space in your wrist. When your median nerve starts to swell the space it has to get through the carpel tunnel becomes less, which causes the pain, numbness, and tingling sensations in your fingers.

The most important way in preventing carpal tunnel is to take good care of your health; this includes maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, and exercising on a regular basis. Other methods that may be helpful in preventing carpal tunnel include:
  •  Maintaining correct posture is important.
  •  Avoid gripping things to tightly, and use less force when typing on a keyboard.
  •  Regularly give your wrists and hands a break.
  •  Keep hands warm, having cold hand all the time you are more likely to develop this syndrome.
  •  Avoid straining wrists and bending them from long periods of time.
  •  When doing repeated motions, be sure to switch one hand to the other, using each hand equally. This   will help to prevent strain.
  •  You could also wear a wrist splint to help keep your wrist in neutral position which will reduce stress    on the fingers and hand.
